The Missing Piece of Silver Coin

Luke 15: 1 – 10. (My emphasis is on 8-10)

“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

I heard this from Dr. Munroe many years ago. “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable”.

You probably aren’t going to value something when you don’t know the purpose of that thing. When you know the purpose of a gift for example, you will do your best to make sure it is protected and kept safe.

In our text above, 3 things caught my attention and I would like to list them here:

1. Recognize that you have a gift. God has giving us gifts. When the woman lost her coin, she knew something was missing. She knew she a piece of silver which can call a gift in this case. She valued it. It was precious to her, so much so that when it got missing, she swung into action to retrieve it. God has given each one of us a gift. You must recognize the gift. It could be the gift  of Salvation. It could be the gift of love that he demonstrated to you on the Cross of Calvary. It could also be the gift of healing or prophecy as outlined in I Corinthians 12, concerning Spiritual gifts.
Ephesians 4: 8 – 12, says God gave us gifts.
2. After she lost the piece of Silver, the next thing she did was she lit a candle. Amazing! We always need light, don’t we? Without light, you can’t see in the dark. Light helps you see properly. Particularly when you are searching for something. When you do not use light, you will always grope in the dark. When light comes, darkness gives way. John the beloved said in John 1:5,
“and the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it”
The Word of God is light.  Psalm 119: 105 says
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
3.The next thing she did was sweep the house and search diligently until she found that piece of silver. Remember, she lit a candle first. When you have light, searching becomes more effective. Light helps you see the dark corner, so you can sweep the dirt away from the corners so you can see properly for what you are searching for.
